Nikkah and Weddings

It is strongly encouraged that Nikkah ceremonies are organised after Jum’uah prayers in following the Prophetic Sunnah. Other days/times will be subject to the availability of the Imam.

Requirements for a Nikkah

In order for a marriage to be conducted by a qualified Scholar of Anjuman-e-Islamia Newham, the following conditions are compulsory and must be met:

  1. Mutual Agreement:In the Shari'ah, marriage (nikkah) is a relationship of mutual love, mercy and kindness (muwaddah, sukun, rahmah). In Islamic law marriage is a civil contract between parties which allows them mutually to agree upon the terms and conditions of their future together. It is advisable that both families of bride and bridegroom have been informed of their intention to be married.

  2. Religious Compatibility: Both spouses must be Muslim. The Shahadah must be taken in the case of a revert. If no Shahadah certificate is evident please note that the whole Shahadah process will need to be repeated.

  3. Documents:

    1. Proof of identity: A passport or a full UK driving licence

    2. Proof of address: A bank statement (within 3 months), current utility bill (within 3 months), Council Tax bill or a Full UK driving licence

  4. Age: Both the bride and groom need to be 18 years of age or over

  5. Bride and Groom to be present: Preferably in the same building/venue

  6. Brides Wali (guardian) or Wakeel (attorney): to be present. Marriage is a happy occasion and should not exclude the family and should be an open declaration in the community. The Masjid does not support, nor conduct, a secret or run-away marriage. If necessary, the Imaam conducting the marriage may call the parents/guardians of the bride to confirm their consent to the marriage, if they are not present within the Nikkah or if they are abroad.

  7. Witnesses: Please ensure there are two adult male Muslims, sane and able to witness the Nikkah and hold a legal status. It is preferred that one witness is represented from either side; both from the bride and bridegroom, along with the brides Wali or Wakeel (attorney). We require proof of Identity for each witness: Passport or Full UK driving license.

  8. Mahr: Which is obligatory part of marriage and a gift given to the bride from the bridegroom on the day of Nikkah or is promised in writing, they need to pay or declare on the day.

  9. Immigration restrictions: There must be no immigration restrictions on either party.

  10. Sharing something sweet following the Nikkah is Sunnah, preferably dates.

  11. Applicants will be required to attend a meeting with a member of the management committee / representative, two weeks prior the Nikkah date in order for the application to be processed. Must bring all original documents required.

  12. Failing to reply to the AIN attempts to contact you regarding your application, will result in termination of your application and also loss of your fees.

  13. Divorced: If any one or both of the couple were previously divorced we require the following original document:

Female: Islamic divorce certificate, the Decree Absolute and confirmation that I’Iddah (waiting period) has been observed.

Male: The Decree Absolute or sign a declaration.

The Masjid will not be held responsible for the invalidity of Nikkah based on oversight of this principle of Shariah.

Please Note:

  1. Decree Absolute: Though you may have been granted a civil divorce, Islamically you will need a certificate of divorce to annul your marriage which is the exclusive right of a Qadhi. Without undergoing this Shariah process or be given an irrevocable talaq, a woman will not be considered divorced from her husband.

  2. Civil Marriage registry: A Nikkah as conducted by an Imam, is not considered a civil marriage under UK law without an official registry. The Masjid recommends all wedding parties to have their marriage officiated at the time of Nikkah.

  3. Polygamy: The law in the UK does not recognise polygamous marriages and any women in involved in a polygamous marriage relinquishes all legal rights over her husbands property, inheritance and conventional marital rights in the sight of the law.

Fees to conduct the Nikkah:

£100 payable for the registration two weeks before the Nikkah date. If there is a delay of more than 1hr on the day of Nikkah, £50 per every additional 30 minutes will be added and will need to be paid on the day. You may gift the Imam performing the Nikkah as you may please. If the Nikkah is at a different venue other then the mosque, transport must be provided to the Imam from home to venue and back home.

Two original copies of the Nikkah certificates will be given on the day. The Masjid will not be responsible for any certificates after this time. If you require more copies they will be charged at £10 per copy.
